Scoil Íosagain School Garden

The School Garden The School Garden is another exciting resource that continues to develop. It is a fantastic facility for our pupils providing an appropriate extension to the classroom in a peaceful yet stimulating atmosphere. The project has provided great opportunities for the whole school community.

Parents, grandparents and friends of the school have volunteered their time to work with the pupils, passing on their knowledge and skills and fostering a respect for the environment and a love of nature. This year we were delighted to be supported by the Inishowen Development Partnership in drawing up a plan for sustainable management.

  • The School Garden is like an outdoor classroom and helps to implement the Primary School Curriculum by:

  • Celebrating the uniqueness of the child  Ensuring the development of the child’s full potential

  • The child’s sense of wonder and curiosity is a primary motivating factor in learning

  • The child is an active agent in his/her learning

  • The child’s immediate environment provides the context for learning

  • Language is central in the learning process

Learning should involve guided activity and discovery methods Volunteers from the local community work with pupils in the School Garden.

The garden is also a focal point for activities organised by the school Green Team. All classes visit the garden as part of the Science curriculum. The garden is also a destination for School Trails including Maths Trails and Environmental Trails. The garden is also a lovely “quiet space” in which pupils can relax and appreciate the peace and calm of nature.

“Going to the garden was so much fun, Running and playing in the sun. Running through the hut made from trees, And hearing the buzz of busy bees. Searching for frogs in the pond And playing with parachute on the lawn.”

(Sarah-Marie Callaghan, past pupil)
